Is video interviewing a substitute for face-to-face interviews?
Video interviewing with Compact Interview is a fast and effective alternative to phone screening and traditional first round interviews. An online job interview process enables you to see and listen to numerous candidates answer your pre-set questions in a matter of minutes. Whilst we would always advocate that a face-to-face interview is essential before offering a candidate the job, there should be no need to meet the entire candidate selection which could take hours and waste time. Video interviewing provides you with rich insight on your applicants, so you can feel confident in evaluating and selecting the most appropriate candidates to meet in person.
Video interviewing sounds very hi-tech and scary?
Compact Interview is 'hi-tech' as we use advanced technology to provide this innovative service - but it's not scary! If you have not previously taken an online video interview, the concept may seem a bit strange and impersonal, but the team behind Compact Interview is very human! Video interviewing is already proving to be very successful in the US and it's an efficient way for an employer to find out more about you in the early stage of the recruitment process, instead of having to rely on your CV alone. Your video job interview will give the employer much more insight on you as a person. And if you are a good fit for the job, you will of course be invited for an interview in person.
What benefit does a video interview have over a CV for screening candidates?
The traditional CV or resume outlines a candidate's employment record and qualifications but it tells you very little about the actual person. Reviewing CVs alone can be difficult for you to decide whether a candidate should be a 'yes' or 'no' in this initial selection process. Video interviewing provide much richer insight at the early stage of the recruitment process and can tell you more about a candidate's personality and presentation.
How secure is a video job interview and who can view it?
My company processes very large numbers of applicants. Can Compact Interview handle this requirement?
Compact Interview is able to handle small businesses with limited staff turnover to international corporations with thousands of applicants. For volume use, each plan is tailored to a client's specific requirements. Video interviewing becomes even more efficient and cost effective when processing volume applicants concurrently. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.
Are video job interviews compliant with equality and discrimination legislation?
In the US, the EEOC (US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) ruled that watching a video clip of a candidate is no different than ascertaining race, religion, sex or origin from reading a CV and discovering the same information.
The subject of compliancy of video interviews with equality and discrimination legislation has not been documented in the UK. To find out more, visit Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development.
Compact Interview is a pre-recorded (asynchronous) video job interview which ensures fairness. All candidates in the process answer the same questions for a particular job and have the same time allocated for their responses which provides a uniform, structured approach to select the most appropriate candidates for face-to-face interviews.
How do my applicants take their video interview and what equipment do they need?
Applicants need access to a computer (PC, Mac, laptop), the internet and a webcam (most laptops have a built in webcam). They also need a quiet area and privacy so that they can concentrate on their answers without distraction. As this is not a two-way conversation and therefore does not require you to be online at the same time, candidates can take the interview when and where it suits them (at home in the evening or over the weekend is normally what works best). When the candidate is ready, they click on the URL web link that you will have sent by email, and they are taken to your interview questions (that you previously set up) on the Compact Interview website. It's an intuitive user process and when the candidate completes the interview, you will receive an email to let you know that the interview is ready for review.
Will I be charged if a candidate doesn't take his/her online job interview?
No, you will not be charged. You only pay for completed video interviews received from your invited candidates so there is no wastage with your expenditure.
How I do know if video interviewing will work?
Video job interviews are being used by many companies around the globe, and in the last year there has been a significant increase in adoption as employers recognise the benefits of this innovative recruitment tool. Concerns have been raised about whether candidates will be happy to go through an online job interview process, particularly where the video system is set with strict controls so that a candidate only has one chance to get his response right. Compact Interview gives flexibility in this regard, and you (as the client) can decide if your candidates are allowed to re-record answers to the questions. In doing so, you are far more likely to engage and provide a positive candidate experience.
What level of support does Compact Interview provide?
We greatly value you and your candidates, and customer service is a high priority. Our founder, Rupert Sellers, has spent 20 years working in luxury hotels around the world and 10 years with a specialist recruitment firm, so delivering a professional service to clients is part of our DNA.
Compact Interview is an easy-to-use system but if you require assistance, we have a robust support service in place. You can chat online to us by clicking on the 'Help' button at the bottom of your screen, or you can email or phone. To get you started we can assist with the questions you want to set for the video job interview, and give advice on how to engage with your candidates during the video interviewing process.
If there are any technical glitches that you or your candidates experience whilst using our video interview service, we are on hand to assist from 08.00 to 20.00 (GMT). Outside of these working hours, we will answer your enquiry within 12 hours.
After my candidates have recorded their video interview, what happens next?
You will be notified automatically by email as soon as each online job interview is completed. When it's convenient, you simply login to Compact Interview to access your 'dashboard' which is where you will see all of your candidates listed on one page with each of their videos. You can watch each video interview from start to finish, or if you prefer you can click onto a particular question and review each of the candidates' responses. You can watch any part of the interview as many times as you like and move from one candidate video to the next at the click of a button. Once you have evaluated the candidates you can invite your shortlist for face-to-face interviews.
Can you integrate your video interview platform with our applicant tracking system (ATS)?
Yes, full integration is possible for most Applicant Tracking Systems. Compact Interview has been designed so that the video job interview platform can run independently, whether or not your organisation has an ATS system – such as Oracle Taleo applicant tracking system or WCN recruitment solutions.
You have the opportunity to start using this video interviewing service instantly. If you would like to integrate the platform with your system to give you a fully automated screening solution, please contact us.
Is Compact Interview a 'live' video service like Skype?
Compact Interview is not 'live'. It is different to Skype because our screening tool collates recorded video interviews. Having researched both synchronous and asynchronous (ie not occurring at the same time) video interviewing platforms, the pre-recorded method is more effective to evaluate and compare candidates quickly, and is becoming the more popular option as awareness builds.
Candidates can record the online job interview whenever and wherever they want, so there is no need to schedule the interview around their work time; employers can review and evaluate all the candidate interviews online whenever and wherever they want. Furthermore, employers can click from one answer to the next - or click from one candidate to the next, saving hours of time.
Can candidates re-record answers to questions if a mistake is made?
The video interviewing system has been designed to meet the different requirements of our clients. Employers can decide whether to give candidates the opportunity to re-record an answer by simply setting the number of re-tries allowed. Some video interview providers offer no flexibility in this regard and only allow one answer per question to be recorded so that a candidate cannot 'cheat'.
At Compact Interview, we take a different view. We recommend that clients set the online job interview by enabling candidates to re-record their answers. For a good candidate experience, flexibility is important. Our video interviews are designed to give an insightful overview of a candidate; they should not be treated as a behavioral scientific test. If the process is too strict, candidates may decide to drop out and employers could lose good talent..
What should I wear for my video job interview?
You should dress as you would for a face-to-face interview. If you are unsure about what is appropriate, it is better to be slightly more formal than informal. You will have the opportunity to see how you appear on the video screen before you record your video interview.
What are the benefits of Compact Interview over phone screens and first round interviews?
The key benefits are efficiency, effectiveness and convenience. Video interviewing will literally save you hours in your recruitment screening process. There's no need to spend time scheduling interviews: Your selected candidates record their video interview in their own time – and you review and assess the videos in your own time. This innovative process will take you a matter of minutes, not hours.
Can video interviews be used for international recruitment?
Video interviewing is ideal for handling international recruitment. Employers can dramatically reduce travel costs (and their environmental impact), as well as hotel accommodation costs. Instead of flying in candidates for face-to-face interviews, you can now handle most of the process using Compact Interview. Video interviewing enables you to pin-point the best selection, and you can then decide to invite only one or two candidates for final interviews in person.
Does Compact Interview work with any web browser?
Yes, Compact Interview has been designed to work with all web browsers and operating systems as long as you have Flash Player installed (this is standard for most computers). The browsers include: Chrome, Internet Explorer (IE7 to the latest IE9), Firefox and Safari.
What happens if I don't want to take a video interview?
As a candidate, the invitation you receive to take your video job interview will be from the employer you have applied to. It's good news for you if you have been invited, as it means that the employer is interested in pursuing your application. The video interview responses that you record are secure and can only be viewed by the employer.
Bear in mind that other selected applicants will go through the same online job interview process as you, and once the video interviews are completed, the employer reviews and assesses the candidates for final selection. Video interviewing ensure fairness as all candidates for a particular job are given the same set of questions with the same amount of time allocated for each answer. This is your opportunity to 'showcase' yourself and let the employer know who you really are. If your application is only supported by your CV, you may miss out on a face-to-face interview later on.
Do I have to sign a contract and are there implementation costs for video interviewing?
No, you don't have to sign a contract and there are no set up fees for our video interviewing service. You don't even have to download any software. You can get started and reap the online job interview benefits now. Simply choose the Plan that suits your needs, and start using. Can I use your video interviewing service if I post my vacant positions on a job board?
Yes. Compact Interview is versatile. It doesn't matter how you attract your applicants for a position. It could be via a job site, or the careers section on your company website or through a referral. Once you have reviewed all the CVs and decided who you want to pursue, you simply invite candidates to record their online job interview.
Soft skills, also known as 'interpersonal skills' or 'people skills' are personal attributes that enhance job performance and career prospects. They relate to a person's "EQ" (Emotional Intelligence Quotient) – personality traits, communication skills, friendliness, and optimism that characterise relationships with other people. Employers are increasingly looking for these qualities which contribute to the success of an organisation.
Being able to show a candidate's soft skills through the use of video interviewing is one of the many benefits of Compact Interview. See wikipedia for more detail on soft skills.
How do I schedule the online job interview time with candidates?
Compact Interview is not a live video interviewing system so candidates don't have to be online at the same time as the interviewer. Candidates, who are invited to take the video job interview, log in at a time and place that suits them, and record their answers. There is no need for scheduling and all they need is a webcam, a computer and an internet connection.
What happens if a candidate does not have a webcam?
Most laptops these days have built-in webcams which a candidate may not even be aware of. If a candidate has never used the webcam facility, the Compact Interview system automatically detects whether a webcam is connected to a computer and enables the user to check video and sound quality. It's a very easy process and you don't have to be technical!
If there is no webcam on a candidate's computer system, a webcam can be purchased via Amazon (or similar sites) for under £10 and typically can be delivered within 48 hours.
